Once a village is activated, villagers turn up and start giving you quests. This then acts as the hub for that part of the game.
On the start of each area you have to rebuild the main village. Each of these islands also has different resources and enemies. Within each area you also have a variety of islands, which you travel to via unlocked portals. The game is split into four areas, with you progressing to each one on the prior’s completion. Now Dragon Quest has followed suit and the result is innately brilliant. In many ways, Minecraft started out as a hat tip to classic 8bit games but switched those 2D pixelated environments into 3D voxels. The layout of Alefgard is also retained in Builders as well and to any self-respecting Dragon Quest fan then that alone is cause for celebration.
So this re-usage of the original Dragon Quest realm is a shrewd one, doubly so as these were 8bit games and Builders recreates that world with blocks that emulates those pixels. In case it wasn't clear, Alefgard was the setting in the first three Dragon Quest games on the NES back in the 80s. In time, the player appears as a new hero to re-take the realm back from the Dragonlord's evil rule. This being an obvious trap and the hero is killed, leaving Alefgard to be overrun by monsters. In a cunning narrative move, the world of Builders is the result of the player accepting the Dragonlord's offer to rule half the world at the end of the first Dragon Quest. The game has you take on the role of your own hero as you try to liberate the realm of Alefgard from the Dragonlord.
