I used the jumper from one of my existing drives to put it on pins 5 and 6 to link them and get 1.5Gb/s data transfer. I wish I had bought mine from Amazon, as Maplin are more expensive. Adaptors are available from Amazon and Maplin. The new drive (the subject of this review) can ONLY use the newer SATA power leads. My old SATA I drives could use either the old white 4-pin molex plugs for power or the newer SATA power leads. This box is then placed in a further cardboard box with scrunched up paper for additional protection. The drive is in a sealed anti-static bag and then in a series of foam inserts in a cardboard box. I don't think it could have been better packed. The drive is supplied with only minimal documentation, no jumpers, no leads and no mounting screws. As I wanted a smooth transition, I chose WD and given the limited speed, I opted for 32MB cache. My motherboard ASROCK P4V88 only claims to support SATA I, so I assumed I would have to slug the new drive with a jumper. My old WD160GB SATA I drives were getting too close to being full for comfort, so I took the plunge and splashed out on one of these drives. These are exactly what I wanted reliable, larger scale storage for my home PC at a great price.

I trust their reliability because my WD experiences have all been good and they are SO simple to install nothing could go wrong. Well thats it really very happy, so far anyway. I believe that Amazon and their suppliers have taken note of peoples obvious disapproval and corrected their past errors. My drives turned up in separate boxes with three layers of foam in each and an anti-static bag(I have added 2 pics to illustrate). However I was keen to buy at the price and thought I would take the risk. I was concerned having read some quite negative reviews relating to the hard drives packaging, or rather the lack of it. I have them quietly spinning away in my PC as I type, having put Windows on one within minutes of leaving the box! These feel like well built drives and the "Green" effect means that they are also quiet and do not generate a great deal of heat whilst in use.

As a result I knew I could just upgrade my PCs two smaller drives safe in the knowledge that my PSU would handle it with no problems. I liked the fact that they adjust spindle speed to reduce power consumption. I have used WD Caviar Green drives before.
